SUFR stages day-long sit-in in Registrar’s office

A group of 60 students staged a day-long sit-in Wednesday in the R e g is tra r ’s o ffice dem anding open nego tia tion w ith U n iv e rs ity P re s id en t Father Edward Malloy regard­ ing the dem ands ra ise d by members o f Students United for Respect (SUFR). The s itin , held on the firs t f lo o r o f the A d m in is tra t io n Building, began at 8 a.m. and ended just after 7 p.m. Throughout the day, the sit-in attracted upwards of 150 black, w h ite , and H ispa n ic demonstrators outside and in ­ side the office, complete w ith blankets, p illow s, radios, and often chan ting , “ W hat do we want?...Respect. When do we want it?...Now.” Demonstrators bore signs that read, “ God is not color b lind," and “ No querem os SUFR ir mas,” which is Spanish for “ We d o n ’ t w a n t to su ffe r/S U FR anymore.” After almost 12 hours of dis­ cussion and nego tia tion , the students agreed to leave the office, A sm aller group o f stu­ dents, under the auspices o f S tuden t G ove rnm en t, w ere scheduled to meet w ith Malloy in his room at 12:30 a.m. today. SUFR said they p lanned to regroup at 7:30 a.m. today in the 24-hour lounge o f LaFortune Student Center. A fter dis­ cussing the meeting w ith M al­ loy, the g roup w ou ld decide whether to stage another sit-in today. Students want Malloy’s attention “We want immediate negotia­ tio ns w ith core m em bers o f SUFR and the adm inistration. ” said Manuel Espino, junior. “We chose to stage the sit-in in the Registrar’s office because it is more visible...Monk’s (Malloy’s) office on the th ird floor would not be as visible."
